Dog Toilet Training
Unlike in the wild where dogs can
discharge anytime and anywhere they want, toilet training is required to every
dog especially if he lives with people. Since dogs do not have the ability to
speak out what they want, it is necessary for dog owners to train their dogs the
basic toilet training. They need to be taught how to hold it and the right place
and time to discharge it.
Toilet training in dogs can be a difficult
task depending on the consistency of your presence and attention. To make the
toilet training a lot easier it is important that the daily routine should be as
much as possible the same. Being out of the house more often will make the
training process more difficult since the dog has to wait for you always before
he can discharge.
When you decided to begin the toilet training to your dog,
give him first a place where you can start the training. A small room with easy
to clean floor or a crate will do. This place will serve as his eating, sleeping
and playing area, in short, his home. If you are to leave your dog for short
period of time, make sure that the door is lock and there is no possibility that
your dog will go out.
When you are out and your dog is just on time to discharge,
he will probably do it in the area where he is presently standing. But
eventually, he will find a certain area in his "home" to do his business. Before
you leave your dog alone in his "home", it is recommended to cover the entire
floor with newspaper. When the time comes that he is able to discharge in one
place, then gradually remove the newspaper. However, if your dog fails to do it
properly, you should take it slow and take one-step at a time.
As your dog grows older, he will likely to control his bladder movements with
ease.
As much as possible, take your dog out more often. This will
make toilet training a lot easier. If you are around, take your dog out every
hour and let him do his business. If he was able to discharge, praise and reward
him. This will give your dog the idea that when you take him out that is the
right time for him to do his business. Moreover, this will tell him to control
his bladder and wait for the next time until you take him out again. Though this
may not happen very soon, patience will make it possible.
Proper dog
toilet training starts when he is about six moths old. Therefore, it is not
right to yell at your dog when he messes around the house. Instead, provide an
area for him were he could do his business, like a room or crate, and cover the
entire floor area with newspaper for easy cleaning. We cannot do anything about
this natural behavior of our dog, but in due time he will be able to control his
bladder and it requires a lot of time and patience.
